| Name: | DIST THE FUCKING ROSE |

Player Name:

AIM Screen Name:
Character Name: Dist (the Rose)
Series: Tales of the Abyss
Age: 34
Physical Description: Dist is ... well, he's hard to sum up in less than a few words, unless you want to be negative. With near-shoulder-lenth lavender-colored hair, pale skin, small, round glasses, and an affinity for women's makeup, he considers himself a stylish near-diva, never ceasing to find a new way to perfect himself just so and look even better than before. He's not particularly tall, and he is rather skinny, but he makes up for those facts by 1) having a mechanized chair that elevates him a bit higher by levitating just slightly (the power of steam engines is marvelous) and 2) wearing loose but stylish clothing. Typically, the clothes themselves aren't offensive: dark shirts with tails, light-colored slacks, an edged jacket with more tails, and a tie, but he tends to combine them in ways that can only be considered matching by people who are either just as insane as he is, or colorblind. The icing on the cake is his tendency to wear hideously large collars that resemble flowers. These are what really make the outfits he wears fantastic in his eyes, or horrific in others'.
Personality: Dist is, as his username implies, something of a spaz. He's whiny and egomaniacal, desperate to get his way and attain what he wants, and is surprisingly driven when it comes to getting where he wants to go. Charming to an extent and certainly charismatic, Dist tries to sound suave and commanding but is quick to devolve to angry yelling when people (mostly Jade and Hojo) inevitably shoot him down or ignore him. He's dedicated to finishing what Jade started, and can be a startlingly good person to bounce ideas off of - unless you're looking for simplicity, since nothing's ever simple with this spaz. Unfortunately, while he does have an excellent education and is a master mechanical engineer as well as having some training in biological studies, he tends to come up short in most other areas - including common sense.
Abilities/Strengths/Weaponry: Dist's greatest ability is hiswhining mechanical aptitude. Despite his failings in other areas, he's a master at construction, particularly in the field of robotics. He can develop weaponry for a ship, for personal use, or for attaching to the crotch region of a surprisingly large and powerful robot. He can make other things, too, like his levitating chair and other such sundry devices, but for the most part he enjoys focusing on tools of destruction that can fire rockets and lasers from their fingertips. Or their crotch region. He is a genius in intellectual rights, but that unfortunately leaves a lot of room for other areas to find themselves lacking.
Weaknesses: And those areas tend to be his common sense and emotional stability. Dist is easily flustered and foiled, and he tends to overreact badly over even tiny things - his name is fairly high on the list - and wind up in a sulk that can last for days. In addition, he's also somewhat weak physically, incredibly susceptible to cold and the illnesses that come with it as well as fatigue and exhaustion. There's also the little point of him being a coward. He'll fight, yes, but he'll send his robots or other people to do it; when faced with one-on-one combat, he'd rather flee than risk injuring himself and his perfect body.
History: Born Saphir in the high-class society of Dubrovnik, he was from a young age indoctrinated into the finer things in life. With loving if distracted parents and a household of servants ready and willing to help out with his every need, Saphir had plenty of free time as a child to indulge himself in education, creativity, and basically anything else he liked. He picked up on reading and mathematics early and well and, after the first few years of homeschooling from tutors, began to take to the sciences with incredible ease. It became obvious very quickly that he was a genius child, brilliant and able to develop creations that were helpful and actually worked, even if they were a little flamboyant and overdecorated. It wasn't long before he was accepted into St. Faustus University to learn beyond what he already knew and begin to assist another young man, Jade Balfour, in a special developmental project that would lead to Saphir's life being changed.
Young enough that his moral stance hadn't been firmly set in stone yet, Saphir was a little wary about the project, which turned out to be replication of living organisms, but quickly took to it as he began to look up to the slightly-older Jade. Despite the boy's distance and stoic personality, Saphir genuinely began to like Jade, who was the first boy his age who was just as much of a genius as he was but was neither jealous nor angry (except when he screwed up). They worked together for several years, and Saphir spent hours and hours of his days developing new ways of replicating, or developing some new trait, or creating a tool or machine that could make their research easier ... or building robots, as he picked up that tendency particularly young. It was a fantastic few years for him, probably the best of his life, and he felt so wonderfully accepted and needed that he never even bothered to think about the future ahead of him outside of terms relating to Jade and the research.
But then the day came that another boy was added to the research project - a scrawny, gangly, dark-haired boy with a sarcastic tone and a negative attitude. Viasti Hojo was the first person in the world that Saphir would genuinely come to hate. At first, he tried to engage his new comrade in the usual things he did, assisting with the research and enjoying their spare time as a group, but Viasti was different, darker, and not particularly inclined to spend his time with the bright and eccentric Saphir. Slowly, as the research started to reach a point where it would be considered 'finished', Saphir found himself being distanced from Jade, who he had taken to as an older brother - or possibly more - due to Viasti's presence. He started to withdraw as well, angry and upset at being left out, and did private research on his own. His interest in weapons development began to pick up at this time more than before.
And then, some time later, when they had reached the culmination of their technology and the replication had been a success, Jade decided to destroy the project. Infuriated, Saphir could only gape in shock at the announcement. All the work they'd done together, all the fun they'd had, the years of research, the development of something so fantastically new, all the work they'd done - and together! - and Jade just wanted to throw it all away? It left Saphir with a horrible burning sense of betrayal - almost as if Jade, who had been abandoning him in favor of Viasti, had finally decided to terminate their past together completely. Saphir refused to accept this and began to ferret away what he could remember of the project, stealing and copying notes when he could while telling Jade that he'd complied and burned them, although with great reluctance. As Jade disappeared into a new life, one without the research and wonder of the replication project, Saphir's anger and feelings of betrayal grew to the point where he finally gave up and cut off the relationship, going back home to try and recreate the project alone with the notes he'd stolen.
As the years passed, he renamed himself Dist and worked more frequently on weapons development and robotics technology. The replication project constantly stayed with him; after some time passed, he let it rest on its own, coming back to it when he felt the urge to rekindle it. He hated Jade for abandoning him and the project they'd developed together, and slowly tried to work it back into creation, thinking that if he could make it work again and fix all the mistake that must have driven Jade to destroy it in the first place, they could return to that happy, research-filled life that they'd had together back in the early days. Of course, he also waits for the day that he can break Jade's skull open for ever abandoning him in the first place ... and Viasti's for making his life so much more difficult.
